I didn't Steal anything - Kleptomania

During my elementary days, I remember a boy who just stole one tiny paper clip on the bookstore. I thought that  he's a bad boy until the word "Kleptomania" came, and then I was confused. Kleptomania is a mental illness where a person could not abstain their cravings on stealing anything. You might get confuse if all thief have this disorder. Well, a thief is a person who steal things that has significant value or generally they steal things for monetary value. While a kleptomaniac steal things without significant value such as paper clips, pens, pins. Some of the kleptomaniacs may not even have an idea that they committed stealing.

In order to be diagnosed, here's some criteria you must know (www.psychiatric-disorders.com):

  • The actions are not better explained by antisocial personality disorder, a conduct disorder or a manic episode.
  • The acts are not the result of any rational or emotional trigger: patients are not stealing because they are angry or want revenge.
  • The person repeatedly steals things for no identifiable reason.
Kleptomania is somehow related to addictive and mood disorder. It is usually thought as a part of what they called Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in which uncontrollable actions are the same with the kleptomania.

There is no cure for this disorder. Once the disorder is verified then a therapy is highly recommended. Counseling and sometimes drug therapy usually included in the treatment. And it has been found that Prozac and Naltrexone is effective and also helpful because it alters levels of serotonin.

Trivia: Kleptomania mostly affects women than men.
